We’d like to introduce you to the team that work on our PADI IDC’s and Instructor level training, including overseeing our Divemaster and MSDT internships. So here’s a brief introduction, with a little humour, at the crew who you’ll be entrusting your future as a PADI Instructor to!!!!
ANDY PHILLIPS M.sc (UK)
PADI Platinum Course Director, DAN Instructor Trainer, PADI Trimix Instructor Trainer, IANTD Instructor Trainer, IAHD-Americas Instructor Trainer, Rebreather Instructor Trainer, Beautiful Oceans Science Instructor Trainer
Utila Dive Centre’s ‘Director of Professional Training’
When writing up this section we realised we had given Andy too much attention on this website already, so in order to keep his ego in check, we just wanted to add he makes great coffee during the IDC, and pays for dinner at the IE party! If this is the first time you’ve come across Andy then feel free to read his bio here.
SUZY PHIPPS B.Sc Marine Biology, (UK)
PADI Platinum Course Director, EFR, IYT and IAHD-Americas Instructor Trainer
Suzy is originally from the UK but grew up as a child in Belize, this instilled in her a love for the environment with pristine jungles and the 2nd biggest barrier reef in the world as her playground. She has trained and dived throughout the world, and has a Bsc in Marine Biology, and in addition to training our Instructors she also co-ordinates with our environmental projects and PADI’s Project Aware. When Suzy is not busy teaching you will find her on our dive boats with her camera set up as she is an avid underwater photographer, and also enjoys sidemount diving. Anyone who ever had the luck to take a course with her agrees that there’s no one as happy and energetic as her and when she’s not teaching scuba she enjoys spending time with her students. Prior to joining us Suzy was managing a busy resort in the Maldives, and her administrative skills will ensure your paperwork is in order and processed for you to soon be Instructing. Suzy has dived in the Maldives, Thailand, Mexico, Vietnam, Belize, Honduras and the Mediterranean and also worked as Course Director in Mexico.
BRYONY ROBERTS (Scotland/Spain)
PADI Master Instructor, EFR Instructor Trainer
Bryony is originally from Scotland but grew up from an early age and that us where she fell in love with the ocean and scuba diving. After graduating University studying business and arts Bryony soon (like many of our staff and candidates) grew tired of the 9-5 and decided to finally leave cubicle behind, taking the plunge and swapping them for a new office under the water and became an Instructor in Majorca, Spain. Bryony has led the role-model career as a dive Instructor and worked in the Mediteranean, North sea of Norway, tropical waters of the Maldives and S.E Asia. Bryony has worked in high end exclusive resorts, backpacker destinations and also has years of experience working on live-aboard vessels. Bryony loves any type of diving that requires a lot of tanks, having a passion for technical diving and especially enjoys seeing new divers’ faces light up after their first experiences in the water. She especially loves to hear from instructor candidates she has worked with on their IDC’s after they themselves venture out with their own first students. In addition to being a very experienced diver and Instructor Bryony is also an accomplished windsurfer and has worked on conservation projects with coral nursery gardens in Indonesia and due to her well rounded appeal and diverse dive career is probably one of the most well liked members of our staff. In addition to being a great IDC Staff Instructor she is also Manager of our MSDT internship program at UDC! If this background wasn’t impressive enough Bryony can also teach scuba diving in 5 languages, English, Spanish, German, Dutch and French!
